During the second ELRN Workshop held in Brussels on 3 June, ELRA President Mihai Taus delivered a presentation exploring the role and the importance of land registries.

The workshop provided an opportunity for land registry professionals, academics and representatives of the European institutions to exchange views on issues of common interest and reflect on the challenges facing the sector. In this context, Mihai Taus used his intervention to draw attention to the often-overlooked importance of land registries, noting that despite receiving less public visibility than other areas of civil law, they perform an essential function by securing the legal effects attached to publicity and ensuring certainty in property rights.

A central message of the presentation was that stronger land registries ultimately translate into tangible benefits for citizens. By reducing disputes, facilitating property transactions and strengthening trust, they contribute to social peace. At the same time, legal certainty creates favourable conditions for investment, access to credit and economic growth, generating benefits that extend well beyond the property sector itself.

Mihai Taus emphasised that a wider appreciation of the role of land registries could contribute to better policy decisions. He noted that a wider understanding and appreciation of their contribution to legal certainty, social peace and economic growth could support more informed policymaking, a conclusion supported by economists and international organisations alike.
